President and Owner
As President and Owner of Newport Hospitality and Hospitality Gifts, Laurie has been a prevailing presence and significant hospitality industry leader both locally and regionally. Laurie spent 12 years planning events for Newport Hospitality before purchasing the business in 2004 and has since led the company to be the first and only accredited DMC (Destination Management Company) in Rhode Island by the Association of Destination Management Executives International. Newport Hospitality is also a 100% women-owned business certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).
After graduating from the Hospitality Management program at UMass Amherst in 1983, Laurie spent her early career in various management positions including catering, sales, and marketing before joining Newport Hospitality, Inc. in 1992. Her commitment to the advancement of the hospitality industry led her to serve on various distinguished boards over the years including the Board of Directors for Discover Newport, the Newport & Bristol County Convention and Visitors Bureau (2005 -2015), the Newport County Chamber of Commerce Board (2016/2017), the Board of Managers for the DMC Network (2008-2014), and the Board of Directors of MPI, Meeting Professionals International (2001-2003). She also served on the RIHA, RI Hospitality Association Board of Directors (1998-2007) where she became the first woman Chair of the Board in 2004 and initiated the Women in Hospitality Council for the mentoring of women in the Rhode Island hospitality community.
In addition to these organizations, Laurie is a long standing member of ISES (International Live Events Association), the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, the Providence Warwick CVB and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. She is an enthusiastic member of the WPO (Women Presidents’ Organization) Providence Chapter since its inception in 2009, and has recently joined the Business Advisory Council for Salve University’s Department of Business Studies and Economics.
In concert with her far-reaching professional representation in the field, Laurie was awarded the 2014 Stephen Elmont Distinguished Alumni Award from UMass Isenberg School of Management, Hospitality & Tourism Management. She is now on the Advisory Board for the HTM Program at the University.
Laurie’s passion for professional excellence led her and the Newport Hospitality team to be selected as the exclusive North American DMC for the Around the World Volvo Ocean Race for its Newport stopover in May 2015. They went on to be recognized with the International Gala Award from Special Events Magazine for Planning Events for the Volvo Ocean Race in Newport. The team was also recognized by ADMEI with two awards, Excellence in Meeting Services and an Achievement Award for Best Overall Program for work on The Volvo Ocean Race.
In 2016, Laurie was honored to be elected by Governor Gina Ramando to the RI Commodores, an honorary esteemed invitation in the state of Rhode Island. As part of the non-profit association of ambassadors, Laurie supports their dedicated mission to the progression of economic growth through hospitality and education.
Laurie’s love for travel has taken her to many colorful destinations over the years, however she devotes the majority of her time both personally and professionally to continually growing her businesses and supporting her team to execute successful and memorable programs.
After many years of being part of Newport Hospitality as "Laurie's husband" Marshall learned the DMC business through "osmosis". When his wife, Laurie Stroll, bought the business in 2004, she was looking for a reliable team member to handle the finances. Marshall jumped in feet first by becoming the Business Manager for the company and quickly became the support system for the Newport Hospitality team, always pitching in wherever needed. Prior to joining Newport Hospitality, Marshall worked at the International Tennis Hall of Fame as their buyer and manager. He also held sales and management positions with Reebok, Circuit City, and Citizen's Bank. A great way to show Marshall your appreciation is to bring him some chocolate chip cookies or Dunkin' Donuts Coffee!
Vice President of Sales
Cheryl Twiss joined the Newport Hospitality team over ten years ago, carrying with her a vibrant sales and hospitality background. In 2006, after spending thirteen years in Newport as the Senior Sales Manager for the Hyatt Regency, Newport Marriott, and the Hotel Viking, specializing in booking business in the Association market, Cheryl became Director of Sales at Newport Hospitality. She has since become a valued and dedicated member of the hospitality industry, serving for two years as the Chairwoman of Women in Hospitality, supporting local hospitality and tourism committees, and recently taking on various leadership roles in the DMC Network sales effort. In 2014 Cheryl was promoted to Vice President of Sales and in this position plays an integral role on the Newport Hospitality Team, vitalizing the sales effort with new and creative industry offerings as well as sharing a wealth of local and regional knowledge with partners and clients.
Among industry achievements, Cheryl was honored to be awarded the Hospitality and Tourism Association's Woman of the Year in 2007 and graciously accepted the Netty Award for Sales Leadership for the DMC Network in 2013. When she's not promoting Rhode Island as an amazing New England destination for a group or conference, Cheryl enjoys yoga, farm to table cooking, and power walking.
Carrie Brown has transitioned from her full time Vice President role at Newport Hospitality to a part time Senior Project Manager assisting with the Volvo Ocean Race project. Since 2002, Carrie Brown has been a dedicated member of the Newport Hospitality team, starting as an entry level coordinator and working her way up through a variety of sales, development and operational positions. In 2011, Carrie received her DMCP (destination management certified professional), demonstrating her commitment to the DMC industry. Prior to joining Newport Hospitality, she graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Communications in 2000 and began her career in the hospitality industry as Meeting Concierge at the Hyatt Regency Newport.
Through years of experience and reinvention, Carrie has attempted to master the difficult task of work-life balance. The solution she finds is in loving what you do, learning from those that you work with and ensuring that your family sees the value in that. Outside of work, Carrie enjoys spending time at home in South County with her family and friends, cheering on her sons’ sports teams, dining out at favorite restaurants and relaxing at the beach.
Emily Ryan began her career with Newport Hospitality in 2009 as the Sales & Marketing intern. After completing her studies in Communications and Public Relations from the University of Rhode Island, Emily joined the Newport Hospitality team full time on the Operations team. Today, as Director of Operations, Emily continues to service clients in the coordination and execution of successful programs. Throughout her time with Newport Hospitality Emily has executed some of the company's most successful programs. When she's not busy planning her next event, you can find Emily relaxing with a great book on one of Newport's beautiful beaches or staying active with kickboxing and yoga.
Prior to joining the Newport Hospitality team, Dotty spent fifteen years as a practicing attorney specializing in civil litigation and the defense of healthcare professionals. She embarked upon this new adventure in hospitality at the beginning of 2017, and is already feeling at home in the Newport Hospitality office, as an essential member of the operations team. Dotty grew up in East Greenwich, Rhode Island and has always loved to share the extra special features of our beautiful state with those not fortunate enough to live here. When Dotty is not at work, she loves digging up quahogs for dinner or spending the day sailing and paddle boarding around Narragansett Bay with her husband and two teenagers. If she's not on the water, she can be found working on her food blog, which chronicles her adventures in the kitchen, or training for her fifth marathon (in Newport!) this October.
Lindsay grew up in Medway, Massachusetts but has been lucky enough to call Newport home for the past four years. After two semesters of internships with Newport Hospitality, she graduated from Salve Regina University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing in December 2016. As a proposal writer and sales coordinator she enjoys making meaningful connections with industry partners and assisting the office with establishing successful programs. Danielle is a native of Newport, and outside of the office, enjoys spending time traveling with her family, jogging, and practicing yoga.
Cori grew up “just over the bridge” in Kingston, Rhode Island, but has been fortunate enough to travel all over the world throughout high school and college. While attending the University of Rhode Island, Cori interned at Newport Hospitality, helping out in any area she was needed. Her path crossed with Newport Hospitality again in early 2017, when she joined the team as Project Manager with a heavy focus on the Volvo Ocean Race, coming to Newport in May of 2018. When Cori is not working, you can find her in the great outdoors – doing anything from biking or hiking to paddle boarding or relaxing on the beach.
